Badger Track and Field Season Opener at Glendale shows promise

Prescott High School track and field team battled it out until the very end on Wednesday night in a tri meet against Apollo and Glendale at Glendale High School.  In the end, all eyes were on the high jump arena in the crisp Phoenix night air as sophomore Paxton Henry jumped for a 6' personal record clinching the victory for the boys side. Paxton also reached a personal best of 41' in the triple jump.  Finishing out the jumps, senior Lukas Stogsdill took first in the long jump with a horizontal jump of 19'8".

Other events on the boys' side finished with strong showings from our Badgers.

In the mid and distance events, Simon Paige took first in the 400m with a 52.9 and crossed the finish line with a 2:00 first place finish in the 800m. Freshman Matt Bradley ran an impressive 4:39 mile, while Luke Arminio won the 3200m with a time of 11:07.

The boys swept the Pole Vault with junior Jason Clustka vaulting 10 ft for a first place spot and sophomore Jesse Regalado at 10 ft and junior Nathan Hater at 9'6", finishing second and third respectively.

Arthur "AJ" McCracken finished second in the 100m against tough competition with a finishing time of 11.6 seconds. McCracken also took second on the 200m event.

Junior Throws captain Luke Heberer took first in the shot put with a personal record of 43' and third in the disc.

Although the second place finishes of the 4x800M team of Garret Ward, John McMahon, Gabriel Schirn, and Arminio and the 4x100m relay of McCracken, Anthony Griskowitz, Stogsdill, and Henry scored no points for the team, their times show promise.

Freshman John Medina finished impressively in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 54.27.

The Lady Badgers did not take home the top spot; however, they opened the season with promise.

Senior Jordan Twombly-Ellis earned first place points for the girls mile running a 5:40 with freshman teammate Swayze Smith right behind in second.

Freshman Makennah Mills ran a 12:36 for a first place finish with Swayze Smith crossing the finish line only one second later.

The girls 4x800M team of Twobly-Ellis, Mills, Smith, and Qianhe “Kelly” Liu won with a time of 11:15.

Freshman Molly Courtwright took first in the open 400m with a finish of 62.4 seconds.

Girls swept the vertical jump events with Caley Cozens and Olivia Fletcher taking second and third in that order, while junior Julie Warne jumped a personal best of 5'2" for an automatic qualifying height in the high jump; though because this meet was not run as a qualifier she will have to try her luck at the team's first invitational at Tolleson High School later this month.

The Prescott girls 4x100m relay team of Hailey Bray, Courtwright, Fletcher, and Mikayla Sell took second place.

Overall it was a long day but a good one for Badger Track and Field, one that is telling of a successful season and promises for a good showing at state with many athletes already reaching the preliminary qualifying standards.

The Prescott Badgers return from spring break to another away meet on March 18 at Horizon High School.
